More Things To See

The Pinhey Estate off Cameron Harvey Drive is open during the summer for visits and events.  This historic site features a nearly-200-year-old Manor House and has extensive grounds available for a summer picnic or a walk in the restored gardens. On the river, it is a site of great natural beauty.

The Quyon Ferry is a fun way to cross the Ottawa River! It crosses from the end of Ferry Road near Fitzroy Harbour, to Quyon, Quebec. From a horse-drawn ferry that was mainly for pedestrians built in 1885 by Augustus Davis, it later became a gas-powered paddle wheel car ferry, and now, a cable-driven car and truck ferry. It operates during the ice-free season, with a crossing about every 10 minutes.

Nearby, Fitzroy Provincial Park has camping, day use areas and a very popular small beach.

Galetta Hydro Dam in Galetta is also worth a stop. The dam and hydro installation themselves are very old but still in use, and the water creates a very scenic pool below the dam. It is a popular fishing spot as well!

With many old farms and woodlots, the area, which is on a southerly extension of the Canadian Shield, is geologically rich, a ‘hot spot’ for birders, and a delight for photographers!
